History is a record of a society's life. In the grand narrative of (male) history, women's positions are often marginal, their characters vague, or they are absent altogether. Oral history is a significant theme in contemporary women's studies. Through oral narration, (elderly) women have the opportunity to tell their own stories, build dignity, and present themselves. Women's oral stories are not about highlighting their outstanding achievements, but about showing how they live as vibrant individuals. When women narrate their own stories, history is restored as a living, humane, and multifaceted vessel. History, it turns out, is woven from ordinary and fragmented lives. Women's memories are the memories of history.
Artist and author Lo Un I uses the oral stories of seven elderly women in Macau as the main thread of her book Whispers. Her own recollections of her mother are also interwoven between the pages, compiling scenes of ordinary yet delicate life into a book. In this book sharing session, author Lo Un I will share her original motivation for writing and the journey within, using the oral stories of the elderly women from the book to bear witness to an era that belongs not only to them but to the collective.
Lo Un I is engaged in art creation, writing, and teaching. She studied design and art in Hong Kong, Italy, and the UK. Her creative work centers on pencil drawing and visual anthropology; her writing topics relate to art and culture, feminism, and oral history. She currently teaches at the Faculty of Education, University of Macau.
