"The mountain rain is about to come, let's pause our steps, and listen from afar to the fishermen's songs of Qingzhou and the bells of A-Ma Temple." This line from a poem on Guia Hill Pavilion depicts the scenery once visible from its peak. A century ago, the views of Lotus Peak's shadow and mirror-like calm waters made Macau a leisurely and comfortable retreat. However, with development across different eras and numerous land reclamation projects, these idyllic scenes of "mountains encircling and verdant air filling the sleeves" are gone, preserved only in old photographs.
In the early 20th century, the Portuguese administration in Macau successively carried out port construction and reclamation works on the Macau Peninsula, Taipa, and Coloane, even proposing future plans. While the actual outcomes differed from the initial blueprints, the overall direction has influenced the city to this day. The photographs in this exhibition come from a 1923 blue book on Macau's port planning. It documented the engineering scenes of the time in areas like Ilha Verde, Canal dos Patos North Bay, Patane, Inner Harbour, Taipa, and Coloane. Beyond these, the exhibition also displays objects associated with these five districts. Through old photos, objects, and nautical charts, visitors can understand the former appearance and stories of the city's ports, building a bridge between people and the city to deepen emotional connections and memory.
