A beautifully crafted stamp captivates the senses. Within its tiny area, one can see meticulous composition and appreciate the artist's thoughtful design. Macao has few illustrators who specialize in stamps, but those who do possess considerable practical experience. Mr. Wu Wei-jian is one of these important local artists.
Mr. Wu demonstrated artistic talent from a young age. In the 1970s, he studied under the late local artist Mr. Gan Changling. He has participated in and won multiple awards at the annual "All-Macao Calligraphy and Painting Joint Exhibition," including first prize in the Western Painting category. Through years of professional practice, he has achieved excellence in both graphic design and painting. Combining these skills and accumulated experience led him onto the path of professional illustration and extended into stamp design.
Over his 30-year career, Mr. Wu has not only engaged in commercial design but has also dedicated significant effort to public welfare, creating logo designs for many local community organizations. The works in this exhibition primarily feature themes of local associations, people's livelihoods, and festivals. Each pattern tells a different story, allowing viewers to appreciate the artworks while understanding the changes in Macao's times. The intricate designs fully exhibit a high standard of artistic quality.
The Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau is committed to promoting art across various fields. By organizing exhibitions for local artists, it allows the public to appreciate the rich and diverse works of Macao. Past exhibitions have featured a wide variety of media, including Chinese painting, Western painting, calligraphy, photography, sculpture, and installations. This is the first exhibition dedicated to stamp illustrations, offering visitors a uniquely interesting artistic experience.
Sincere thanks to the co-organizer, the Macao Art Association, for their full support, and to the Macao Post for generously lending designs created by Mr. Wu for their bureau, which greatly enriched the exhibition's content.
