Aquino da Silva is one of the few local artists dedicated to English calligraphy as a creative medium. With a background in graphic design, he became captivated by the beauty of hand-painting, the textures of different papers, the traces and variations of pen strokes, and even the physical sensation of applying force. After years of practice, he has successfully brought English calligraphy into the commercial sphere, giving the art form greater exposure.
For this exhibition at Ox Warehouse, the artist elevates his craft by merging two-dimensional English calligraphy with ceramics and everyday utilitarian objects. He further transforms the space using installations and partitions, creating an immersive environment. Visitors will experience not just a simple calligraphy exhibition, but a multimedia showcase where every element—from the artworks to wooden objects and promotional designs—exudes a distinct, handcrafted feel.
In preparation, Aquino traveled to Japan to create his own ceramics and worked on carpentry in the Ox Warehouse backyard. With every detail being original and handcrafted, he seeks to break new ground by integrating experimentation, fine art, and craftsmanship into a cohesive whole, marking a personal creative revolution.
This exhibition is part of the New Art People Project 2016.
