With the economic take-off in the 1970s, Macao's demand for labor increased daily. In the late 1980s, Macao formally introduced foreign workers, joining the global wave of transnational labor migration. Today, the number of foreign workers in Macao continues to rise, with the majority being from Southeast Asia. Their presence in community spaces like the Three Lamps district forms a vibrant and multifaceted scene.
Foreign workers who travel far from home to work, especially domestic helpers, often need to learn and even master the local culture. In contrast, locals' understanding of the workers' cultures is often disproportionate. The many foreign faces can become just a blur of indistinct passersby.
Through collage work titled "Hometown, Our Time," artist Yang Guanying aims to collect their stories through observation and conversation. The project seeks to present more authentic appearances and living conditions, moving beyond the polarized stereotypes society often holds about them.
