To preserve Macao's local history and culture and promote the traditional values of mutual assistance among residents, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (ICM) and the Patane Tou Tei Miu Charity Association collaborated to establish and revitalize the building at No. 52-54 Rua dos Mercadores, transforming it into the "Patane Night Watch House," a museum dedicated to showcasing Macao's night watch culture. The Patane Night Watch House officially opened to the public on December 18, 2015.
Night watching (打更) was an ancient Chinese nighttime timekeeping job that also served to remind people to guard against fire and theft. This profession once existed in Macao and later evolved into a civil defense-oriented watchman system. However, with urban modernization, the sounds of watchmen carrying lanterns and striking gongs to announce the time in the streets and alleys have vanished, and they no longer undertake public security duties. The Patane Night Watch House is now the only remaining witness to this profession.
The Patane Night Watch House is part of a row of residential houses. It consists of two single-story bungalows with a gable roof. A stone chamber supported by brick pillars is located beneath the rear building, containing a large retaining stone. This layout fully demonstrates construction adapted to the hillside and local conditions, representing an organic integration of natural and cultural landscapes.
The museum houses an exhibition with two main themes: "Macao Night Watch Houses" and "The Image of the Night Watchman." Through historical photographs, physical exhibits, the restored building itself, and artistic image creations, it presents the vibrant life and evolution of this profession.
To avoid affecting public visits, photography or videography for purposes other than general commemorative shots (e.g., wedding photos, model shoots, or advertisements) must apply to the Cultural Affairs Bureau at least twenty days in advance.
