For the past 17 years, the Chinese Cultural Exchange Association has invited elite cultural groups from across China to perform in Macau, showcasing diverse art forms like Peking Opera, Huangmei Opera, Kunqu Opera, Sichuan Face-Changing, Yanbian dance, and more. This initiative aims to bring Macau residents closer to the richness of Chinese culture, fostering appreciation, cultural confidence, and patriotic spirit.
This year's Mid-Autumn celebration, themed "Puxian Opera Welcomes the Mid-Autumn Festival," features a special performance by the Fujian Xianyou Puxian Opera Lisherg Art Inheritance and Protection Center. Admission is free, and all are welcome to register.
Puxian Opera is one of China's oldest theatrical forms. Originating from the Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, it was brought to the Putian and Xianyou regions of Fujian by migrating populations. It boasts over 5,000 traditional plays, with more than 80 preserving the original style of Song and Yuan Nanxi opera. Its musical structure, phonology, and lyrical patterns are consistent with Tang and Song dynasty music. The role system, known as the "Seven Roles Troupe," includes Sheng, Dan, Tie Sheng, Tie Dan, Jing Zhuang (Jing), Mo, and Chou. In the late Qing Dynasty, the role of Lao Dan was added, forming the "Eight Immortals Troupe." The term "Jing Zhuang" retains its Song Dynasty Zaju nomenclature, earning Puxian Opera the title of a "living fossil" of Song and Yuan Nanxi. It was listed among the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006.
The Fujian Xianyou Puxian Opera Lisherg Art Inheritance and Protection Center, founded in 1952, is a nationally recognized key local opera troupe renowned at home and abroad. It has preserved many unique classic plays, such as Mulian Rescues His Mother, Hundred Flowers Pavilion, Seeing Off for a Thousand Miles, and Portrait of Jing De, showcasing the classic artistic paradigm of Puxian Opera refined over centuries since the Song and Yuan dynasties. The center has made outstanding contributions to the continuation of this ancient art form.
