An exhibition exploring the reinterpretation of Renaissance masterpieces through the personal lens of artist Dai Yongning.
"Image Cube: Image X Image X Image" unfolds a cubic dimension of imagery. The exhibition creates a three-dimensional field of meaning, moving from the original interpretation of an image, to Dai Yongning's reinterpretation, and finally to the viewer's participatory interpretation. This forms a Dai Yongning-style context, narrating "One Man's Renaissance."
We all have experience appreciating world-famous masterpieces. Standing before these great works, we often search for reference points to gauge our own understanding, cognition, and even stance towards the artwork. In this process, we frequently discover ourselves within the act of appreciation—much like a search for self-identity. Through repeated viewings, we expand our various facets, sketching out our personality traits across these dimensions. This repeated reading is akin to experiencing successive expansions of one's own individuality.
In art history, the Renaissance was an era of profound cultural change and achievement. Renaissance painters and artists created a pinnacle of visual art, a golden age of artistic creation. These artists are often renowned for specific, unique projects, producing various classic scenes. However, Dai Yongning repeatedly reads and repaints the classic scenes from this period, adding his own emotional text. This method resembles the cartographic technique in iconography—a juxtaposition of image and text.
Dai's inserted phrases combine specific personal sentiments with the images. For example, in the work "皇" (Emperor), the inscription reads, "esta e a prova que eu tenho uma vez todo-poderoso" (This proves I was once all-powerful), directly pointing to the artist's own past moment of glory. In the work "蒙羅" (Mona), "H29" refers to evidence on the back of the authentic Mona Lisa, a subject of ongoing debate regarding its authenticity. Most representative is his self-portrait "尼克" (Nick), painted within this self-created era, marking the monumental significance of the "portrait" content for himself and this "period."
In this exhibition, within the artistic process of the Renaissance, Dai Yongning is not merely a descendant of an artistic lineage paying homage to master styles. He has also realized his own projections and overlays, resembling a passionate projection and nostalgic romance of recreating a personal golden age.
