Naughty Roll Design Show: Design for Fun
Naughty Roll (沙沙滾) is an independent Risograph printing, publishing, and design brand studio founded in Macau in 2019. In Cantonese, "沙沙滾" often implies carelessness or haste, but also carries a sense of quirky fun. However, Naughty Roll is anything but careless when it comes to design and Risograph printing. We believe design should be uninhibited, constantly pursuing imaginative and mind-opening concepts. "Play, but play seriously and with quality." Our ultimate goal is to infuse fun into design while presenting high-quality work.
Currently, Naughty Roll's design products are sold in independent bookstores and online platforms across Mainland China, Macau, and Taiwan. Beyond creating our own products, we also offer curation, design, and Risograph printing services.
This debut exhibition, "Naughty Roll Design Show," features 13 series of works created since the brand's inception. Among them, "IMBALANCE," "FORGET THE G," "BORN AT THE WRONG TIME," "WASTE TIME CLUB," and "Dan’clock name?" are being publicly released for the first time.
Exhibition Highlights
Unlike typical exhibitions with large-scale pieces, Naughty Roll's works are characterized by their small format and high quantity, featuring numerous intricate elements within a single frame. Their works are publications and products meant to be read up close. While the four designers have distinct styles, the unifying thread is Risograph printing. The unique effects of Riso—vibrant fluorescent colors, natural misregistration from color layering, and halftone textures—bring a cohesive, vivid palette to both their printed works and the exhibition layout, creating order from irregularity and a grand picture from fragments.
- Kun Lam created a new piece, "Imbalance," specifically for this exhibition. The central illustration, a labor-intensive new work, uses CMYK offset printing for rich color saturation. The long-format illustration depicts mutated humans and plants, with elongated or widened bodies and varied faces, resembling different races of aliens and creatures living and playing inside and outside a train—a microcosm of diverse lives. Another work portrays rooftop life scenes from a bird's-eye view, inspired by the view from the studio's rooftop, where people are imagined as lively and ghostly, and plants and objects are given life.
- Dan Ferreria presents "Forget the G," a zine dedicated to the Macau alternative rock band of the same name. Using Riso printing on papers of varying textures, he transforms typography and imagery into musical notes and rhythms to interpret the band's music. Each page corresponds to a song, complete with a QR code for listening, offering a combined visual and auditory experience.
- Wakka Cheang's "Brave Time Series" clocks feature six characters from classic games—the Brave, Princess, King, Mage, Evil Dragon, and Demon King—brought to life with clock mechanisms.
- Keika Leong's "福_Fortune" calendar is presented as postcards, small in size but rich in elements, capturing beautiful memories of simple, ordinary life.
- The "Golden Rat into the Rice Bag" greeting card combines works from all four designers, thoughtfully packaged in a familiar local rice bag for a tactile and亲切 feel.
