This exhibition is part of the series of events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great artist, Hong Xiannu. Her artistic achievements and spiritual qualities have resonated widely across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. To mark this significant occasion, the Macau Communication Society, in collaboration with several organizations from Beijing and Guangzhou, presents this thematic exhibition on the Cantonese opera classic 'Sou Shu Yuan'.
This exhibition re-examines the developmental history of the Cantonese opera 'Sou Shu Yuan', exploring its contemporary value and historical-cultural significance. It aims to promote the prosperity of China's excellent traditional culture with a spirit of upholding tradition while innovating, thereby strengthening cultural confidence.
Cantonese opera originated in Guangzhou and is popular in the Greater Bay Area and Guangxi, with widespread dissemination in overseas Chinese communities. It is characterized by openness, inclusiveness, and assimilation. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the national opera industry flourished through extensive reforms. Riding this wave, Ma Shizeng and Hong Xiannu broke the tradition of 'senior actors not performing old plays' by creating 'Sou Shu Yuan'. The opera's success was unstoppable, earning Cantonese opera the reputation of 'Southern Red Bean'. Its adaptation into a film further popularized it across the nation.
As a classic work with distinct characteristics of its era, 'Sou Shu Yuan' has, over the past 70 years, continuously expanded its thematic significance and integrated contemporary aesthetics through the inheritance and development of the Ma-Hong artistic school, becoming an unforgettable cultural classic.
