The Cinematheque・Passion, under the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents the "Freeze Frame: Chan Hong Ngai Still Photography Exhibition" from September 1 to December 31. This exhibition showcases a curated selection of stills from several notable Macao films, including Sisterhood, Macao Year, Madalena, and Where the Wind Blows. Admission is free.
This exhibition is part of the "Rewind" and "Fast Forward" series at the Cinematheque, inspired by the essential buttons of a video recorder. The "Rewind" series focuses on local themes, while "Fast Forward" draws inspiration from avant-garde works abroad, symbolizing a vision that is rooted in Macao yet open to the world. The "Freeze Frame" exhibition is the first in the "Rewind" series, aiming to preserve the beauty of cinema through still photography.
Macao-based still photographer Chan Hong Ngai, also known as "Akimoto," began his career by taking on-set photos for the local film The Gangster's Tale 3. He officially entered the profession as a still photographer for the film Sisterhood. Over the past decade, he has progressed from working on small independent short film crews to large-scale productions with hundreds of members abroad. Chan has witnessed the flow and changes of time through light and shadow, connecting deeply with Macao cinema in his own unique way.
