The contemporary dance poem drama Poetic Recollections of Dongpo deeply distills the essence of Chinese aesthetics, presenting a spectacular artistic feast through innovative techniques that showcase the vitality and charm of China's outstanding traditional culture.
Created by internationally renowned choreographer, dancer, painter, and visual artist Shen Wei, the work draws inspiration from the poetry and life of the great Song Dynasty literary master, Su Dongpo. It presents the spiritual world of the literati by fusing various art forms such as visual effects, calligraphy, painting, and martial arts. The performance transcends time, offering a delicate deconstruction of emotions that invites deep reflection. Accompanied by the musical compositions of top Chinese-French composer Chen Qigang, the dancers move gracefully and in unison to the melodious tunes of the guqin and contemporary music.
This unique contemporary dance poem drama was specially commissioned by the China Oriental Performing Arts Group from Shen Wei. Shen Wei is a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship and numerous other honors. The China Oriental Performing Arts Group is dedicated to telling Chinese stories through art and has created and performed many outstanding works beloved by audiences both in China and abroad. Poetic Recollections of Dongpo has graced international stages including the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York.
In this work, Shen Wei explores the roots of art in an elegant manner, bringing the rich and interesting poetic tradition to life on stage. It allows the audience to appreciate traditional Chinese culture while paying tribute to Su Dongpo, a revered literary giant in Chinese history. This exquisite masterpiece, with its intoxicating dance steps, rhythms, and emotions, deeply expresses Su Dongpo's sentiments and resonates with the audience.
