Exhibition Overview
Taiwanese illustrator Chinlun Li published her first picture book in 1992 and established her studio in 2010, beginning to design products with her illustrations. Her latest exhibition, "Animal Hospital 39," was first shown at the Ox Warehouse last year as part of the "Animals Are People Too - Adult & Children's Creation Exhibition." This year, it moves to Meow Space to continue its run. Meow Space is an arts and cultural venue that rescues stray cats and sells homemade products. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition and also meet the adorable resident cats.
About "Animal Hospital 39"
A dog wants to visit his good friend, a cat, at the animal hospital. But he is old and cannot walk far, and the rain is getting heavier. The dog musters the courage to hail a taxi and timidly asks, "I am a dog, will you take me...?"
A dog lost in the market, a cat that sneezes and sometimes coughs, a rabbit that "hates chewing and is stubborn" and needs its teeth trimmed, even a stuffed toy that "wants new ears and a new tail" and a dizzy butterfly—they all find their way to Animal Hospital 39, seeking the kind-hearted doctor to solve their problems.
Stories of birth, aging, sickness, death, love, and separation—ordinary yet extraordinary moving tales—unfold continuously in this small hospital. A group of stray dogs watches enviously as their companion, Little Flower, is adopted and loved for a lifetime. This is the hope of animals and perhaps the longing of humans as well. With moist eyes and upturned lips, everyone finds in Animal Hospital 39 an imagination of happiness and the warmth of living passionately.
About the Artist: Chinlun Li
- Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1965.
- Holds a Master's degree in Communication Design (majoring in Illustration) from the Royal College of Art in the UK.
- After publishing her first picture book in Japan in 1992, she created the beloved character "Fat Face" in 1993. The picture book "Seeds, Spit Spit" not only won the top prize at the Hsin-Yi Children's Literature Award that year but has also accompanied many children over the past 20+ years who worried that "swallowing a seed would make a tree grow."
- From "Fat Face" to the dogs in "A Kind, Gentle, Rich Lady and Her 100 Dogs," the animals and vets in "Animal Hospital 39," the creators searching for their future in "The Seat by the Window, the Light is Just Right," and the exploration of human-animal relationships in "Talking Bad About Cats," the characters in Li's work share real and profound life experiences.
- In 2010, she formally established Chinlun's things Studio, entering a new creative phase and beginning to use "illustration" as a foundation for designing products.
- She compares the essence of her creation to "a professional stage clown, standing on stage willing to use every method to make the audience happy." It's all about bringing joy.
