The Ark - Association of Macau Art (AAMA) proudly presents the 2025 Art Power Convergence: Sailboat Legacy Exhibition. This showcase features the works of nine local art enthusiasts, including realistic model ships, paintings related to sailing ships, and mixed-media creations. The exhibition aims to immerse visitors in an artistic atmosphere and allow them to appreciate a series of outstanding works.
In the 1970s, during the transition from wind-powered to mechanically-powered sailing ships, a large number of fishing boats went to shipyards for upgrades, driving the development of the shipbuilding industry. The 1980s marked the golden age of Macao's shipbuilding industry, with shipyards constructing not only fishing boats but also cargo ships and participating in the building of government vessels. Subsequently, as handcrafted wooden fishing boats could no longer compete with the price advantage of vessels from Mainland China, the once-major industry of shipbuilding in Macao eventually declined.
Today, all local shipyards have closed, and the shipbuilding industry has gradually faded. However, thanks to the support of the Macao government over the past decade, the few remaining master shipbuilders have been invited to teach classes on making realistic model ships. Through the 'big ship, small work' method, they instruct interested citizens in crafting sailing ship models, ensuring the craft is passed on.
This exhibition aims to introduce both local residents and tourists to the glorious history of Macao's shipbuilding industry. By viewing artworks related to shipbuilding, it allows the craft to be transmitted in a new way. The model ships, paintings, and mixed-media works created by the exhibitors recreate the brilliant history of Macao's shipbuilding and awaken the city's cultural memory.
Ark - Association of Macau Art (AAMA) was established in 2014 with the mission of promoting art and culture. It aims to provide Macao residents with a space to learn art, unleash creativity, and enjoy the fun of creation through various artistic activities such as exhibitions, lectures, and workshops. In addition to enhancing the public's appreciation of art, it also seeks to improve their quality of life. The association believes art is an important channel for cultivating the mind and relieving stress.
