In the Catholic Church, Saint Joseph is a familiar and intimate father figure.
Pope Francis declared this year the "Year of Saint Joseph," noting that Saint Joseph is an "indispensable figure in the history of salvation" and serves as a "pivotal link connecting the Old and New Testaments." In his Apostolic Letter Patris Corde (With a Father's Heart), the Pope describes seven images of Saint Joseph as a father – beloved, tender and loving, obediently enduring, obedient, welcoming, creatively courageous, and hardworking – as the shadow of the Heavenly Father on earth. The virtues and wisdom embodied by Saint Joseph are worthy of our learning and emulation in today's ever-changing world.
Saint Joseph faced suffering with gentleness and perseverance, as reflected in the proverb (25:15): "Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones." Macau calligrapher and Catholic Mr. Choi Chuen Hing will use the art of arts in Chinese culture – "calligraphy" – to convey biblical teachings in this exhibition. He writes about the loyalty, obedience, humility, and perseverance of Saint Joseph, using words for evangelization while showcasing the beauty of various calligraphic scripts. Through calligraphy, he engages in meditative prayer, cultivating the mind and finding inner peace.
