Exhibition Overview
Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and curated by the Museum of Design Zurich, the Wolfgang Weingart Typography Design Exhibition showcases over 200 graphic design works by the international typography master Wolfgang Weingart. The exhibition offers a comprehensive look into Weingart's experimental and influential career.
About the Artist
Wolfgang Weingart is regarded as the 'enfant terrible' of modern Swiss typography, having revolutionized the field and written a new chapter in world design history.
- Mid-1960s: Broke conventions by eliminating the standard right-angle constraints of type, re-spacing letters, and reorganizing layouts.
- 1970s: Integrated halftone film into collage art and used printing techniques to produce collage patterns, foreshadowing the digital sampling methods of the postmodern 'New Wave' movement. He pushed letterpress and typographic printing to their limits.
- Later Work: Utilized effects created by photocopiers as a design expression.
- Teaching Legacy: Taught at the Basel School of Design (Schule für Gestaltung Basel) from 1968, educating generations of designers. The exhibition also features works by his students, illustrating his teaching methodology and influence.
