Overview

Vasco da Gama Garden is a historic public park located on Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida in Macau. Built in the late 19th century, it stands on the former site of the 'Avenida Vasco da Gama', a grand boulevard constructed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's fleet reaching India. Today, the garden is one of the remaining green spaces from that historic promenade.

Historical & Cultural Highlights

The garden is composed of two square plots. Its central feature is a bronze bust of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, unveiled on January 31, 1911. The sculpture was created by Tomas da Costa and stands atop a stone obelisk with bas-reliefs.

Park Development

• 1898: The original 'Avenida Vasco da Gama' boulevard was built, lined with false bodhi trees.
• 1997: Major renovation added the wave-shaped fountain, accessible pathways, a water feature around the statue, and upgraded the children's playground.
• 2004: Another renovation included the construction of an underground parking facility to alleviate local parking shortages, with the park above restored to its original appearance.
