This exhibition celebrates the 5th Anniversary of CCCN Macau (Cardinal Newman Cultural Centre). It showcases the history of the Imprimerie de L'Orphelinat Salésien (Orphanage of the Immaculate Conception Printing Press), a local Catholic printing press founded in 1906 by Italian Salesian priest Fr. Luigi Versiglia. This was the first Salesian House in East Asia.
The orphanage later evolved into the "School of Arts and Crafts of the Immaculate Conception," offering courses in typesetting, printing, and binding. It was established to provide male orphans with practical skills for livelihood. The school primarily printed newspapers and publications for the Church and later expanded into a publishing house, making significant contributions to education, the development of printing technology, and cultural dissemination in Macau. It served as a crucial cradle for the local printing industry, training many technicians who later worked for the Macau Government Printing Bureau.
The exhibition features archives related to the Salesian printing press, including books, commemorative journals, labels, postcards, newspaper clippings, and movable type from the era.
