In everyday language, we often unconsciously use 'tautology,' but in the realm of art, it becomes a deeply inspiring expressive technique. This exhibition attempts to explore the possibilities brought by tautology: Is it a constraint or a liberation? Is it meaningless repetition, or a self-confirmation with hidden meaning?
In language, 'tautology' manifests as repeating the same concept with different words, such as 'see with one's own eyes,' 'free gift,' or 'unexpected surprise.' In logic, the symbol 'T' represents a proposition that is always true based solely on its own logical structure, independent of external conditions, for example: 'It will rain today' or 'It will not rain today.'
Such statements may seem empty or redundant, yet they contain 'variation within repetition'—how does meaning transform when similar elements are placed in different contexts or mediums? In art, it transforms into a reflection on language itself, sign systems, and even cultural structures. By repeatedly presenting similar or identical elements, artists challenge the viewer's expectations of 'meaning,' prompting us to question: Is our understanding always built upon constantly repeated language and symbols? Perhaps it is only within repetition that we can discover those subtle differences.
This exhibition brings together multiple artists' interpretations of 'tautology' through different media and techniques. They create in pairs, presenting 'repetition' and 'ambiguity' under 'synonymy.' These works make us ponder: When words or images repeat, do they still possess freshness? Or is it precisely within repetition that we gradually see different perspectives and depths?
For 22 years, Creative Macau – Macau Creative Industries Centre has consistently supported diverse artistic creation, encouraging innovation in expression and breakthroughs in visual arts. In this world, perhaps it is these hidden repetitions that construct our experience and understanding. Through this exhibition, we invite everyone to enter this labyrinth, to rethink the essence of 'meaning,' and to find oneself in repetition and depth in simplicity.
