This exhibition showcases the manuscripts, poetry collections, photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, musical scores, songbooks, and related artifacts of Macau poet Hua Ling. Rising to prominence in the Chinese poetry scene during the 1930s and 40s, he was hailed as the 'Trumpet of the Times' during Shanghai's 'Solitary Island' period. All exhibited items were generously donated by Hua Ling's family. This is the first comprehensive and multi-dimensional exhibition introducing Hua Ling, his poetry, and his era, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau to enhance public awareness and understanding of Macau's literary heritage.
Hua Ling (1915–1992), originally named Feng Jinzhao, was born in Macau. He graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages at Shanghai National Jinan University in 1939. For over a decade thereafter, he led a wandering life across Yunnan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Chongqing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Macau. Despite a challenging life, his creative output never ceased, resulting in a vast number of published poems and translations in various regions. He returned to settle in Macau in the early 1950s, continuing to create and revise his works. From the late 1960s onward, he focused on the study of classical Chinese poetry and couplets.
Published Works: Rose, Sunflower, Gypsophila, Morning Glory, Spark Collection, and Collected Works of Hua Ling. Unpublished Works: A significant volume of unpublished translations, poems, couplets, and research papers.
To complement the exhibition and help Macau residents better understand Hua Ling and his works, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has published two books:
Both books are rich in content, featuring some never-before-published works and hard-to-find poems scattered across various periodicals. A book sale with discounted prices will be available on the opening day of the exhibition. During the exhibition period, the books will be sold at their regular prices.
