Exhibition Overview
Taipa Village Cultural Association presents a solo exhibition by the internationally acclaimed Portuguese illustrator André Carrilho, showcasing his unique personal works and the fruits of his artistic endeavors. Carrilho's sketchbooks are largely born from his travels, capturing scenes from remote regions of Portugal to major metropolises like New York, London, and Paris, as well as locations including Macao and Hong Kong.
Artistic Style & Technique
- The expressive watercolors in his sketchbooks are typically composed of just two or three overlapping colors.
- They depict a high contrast between background and foreground, creating a strong impression and sense of place.
- His sketchbooks have been published in two editions by publisher Abysmo: "Inercia" (Inertia) in 2014 and "Atrito" (Friction) in 2018.
- For this exhibition, Carrilho combines the techniques from his sketchbooks with Risograph printing.
- The Risograph printer was released in Japan in the 1980s and has been adopted by contemporary illustrators and artists in the last decade, who utilize its repeatability to produce unique visual effects.

- Over a thirty-year career, André Carrilho has received over 100 awards and honors in the fields of illustration, editorial cartooning, animation, and comics.
- He has held exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, France, the Czech Republic, China, and the United States.
- His work has been published in a range of newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, The Independent on Sunday, NZZ am Sonntag, Harper's Magazine, Diário de Notícias, and New Statesman.
- In 2002, he received the Gold Award for Illustrator Portfolio from the Society for News Design (USA), one of the world's most prestigious illustration awards.
- In 2015, a comic he created about the Ebola epidemic went viral globally and won the World Press Cartoon Grand Prix.
- That same year, he was invited to create a cartoon mural for Vanity Fair's annual Oscar party.
- In 2020, he wrote and illustrated the book "A Menina com os Olhos Ocupados" (The Girl with the Occupied Eyes), which later received the Gold Award from the Society of Illustrators.
