Ark - Association of Macau Art presents the second installment of its annual thematic series "Art Resonance: Five Solo Exhibitions" from May to September 2023. This series brings together five local artists, each drawing inspiration from one of the Five Elements (Wu Xing) – Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Through diverse mediums and styles, the artists showcase the creative potential and unique characteristics of each element, deconstructing their artistic concepts and the messages conveyed in their works to foster artistic exchange.
The concept of the Five Elements dates back to the Warring States period, originally a philosophical system in political science. Confucianism categorized all things in the universe into the five major classes of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, later collectively known as the Five Elements, representing an abstract summary of the five different attributes of all things in the universe.
The second exhibition, held at CAFE VOYAGE from June 21, 2023, features the illustration exhibition "Sui Ren Shi" by Macau artist Vanda Chan (Ka Ian Chan), inspired by the element of Fire from the Five Elements.
According to ancient Chinese mythology, Sui Ren Shi invented the method of drilling wood to make fire, marking a crucial step in the development of human civilization. Since then, humanity's study of fire has continuously advanced, leading to the invention of various materials and the creation of diverse cooking utensils and methods. In the pursuit of culinary arts, fire has become a vital element, symbolizing civilized knowledge and human creativity.
The "Sui Ren Shi" exhibition uses fire as its theme and the element "Fire" as its creative concept, showcasing illustrations related to human fire-based cooking culture. Through these illustrations, viewers can understand how various cooking methods—such as steaming, boiling, stewing, roasting, and baking—were performed before the invention of modern electronic kitchen appliances. The exhibition invites viewers to appreciate humanity's relentless pursuit of creativity and knowledge.
By examining different cooking cultures, viewers can observe humanity's continuous progress. What drives this progress? Is it the desire for delicious food, the aspiration to optimize life, or the inherent creativity within humans? These questions will spark reflection and exploration among visitors.
The "Sui Ren Shi" illustration exhibition invites the audience to explore the unique relationship between humans, food, and fire, experiencing the charm and depth of fire-based cooking culture.
Vanda Chan is a freelance illustrator and children's drawing instructor from Macau. She holds a Master's degree in Illustration from Falmouth University, UK. Her creative inspiration primarily comes from stories about food. In the future, she hopes to explore cuisines from around the world as her creative theme, conveying the joy brought by savoring delicious food to her audience through her works.
Her illustrations were exhibited in her solo exhibition "City Taste" in 2020, which focused on Macau's old city and dietary life, presenting the memories of Macau people.
She has worked as a part-time painter for LOUIS VUITTON MACAU and has collaborated with local commercial institutions on various illustration projects, with clients including MGM COTAI and Companhia de Electricidade de Macau.
Ark - Association of Macau Art (abbreviated as AAMA) aims to promote art and culture. Through organizing various art activities such as exhibitions, lectures, and workshops, it provides Macau residents with a space to learn art knowledge, unleash creativity, and enjoy the fun of creation. This not only enhances the public's appreciation of "art" but also improves their quality of life. Additionally, it offers an artistic outlet to release stress and boredom from work and daily life.
