Taipa Village Cultural Association is honored to present a new series of paintings by Macau artist Crystal Chan (Chan Wai Man). The exhibition explores the artist's relationship with travel and the emotional journey within, unveiling fantasies of escape from everyday life.
Through the new works in Subtropical Romance, Crystal Chan contemplates travel, places transformed into desire, the atmosphere of memory, and the temperature and humidity felt by the skin. These scenes evoke fluid places, people, and plants, circulating within personal and collective imaginations. Tropical regions provide a romantic imagination, allowing travelers to recount tales of idyllic vacations—distant beaches, exotic fruits, and abundant palm trees. These stories evolve into our fantasies and fictions of a good life.
"When I was little, I never imagined Macau would one day become a tourist destination capable of supplying fantasies. Yet now, countless tourists flock to this city, escaping the familiar to seek paradise in a strange land," says Chan.
Born and raised in Macau, Chan experienced its handover from Portugal to China and has lived in various places herself. This cultural transfer and shifting identity have given her a profound understanding of identity's complexity and the prejudices and expectations it faces in society. Through her art, familiar yet ambiguous elements express the feelings of displacement and alienation between individuals and their surroundings.
Emotion and atmosphere are recurring elements in her work. Her paintings feature solitary figures and desolate landscapes rendered with emotionally charged brushstrokes. In her sound installations, she creates detached environments by blending ambient sounds from nature and the city with improvised music played on instruments and non-instruments.
Subtropical Romance is a literary theme that inspired Chan's latest painting series. These works can be read as a visual narrative novel, dissecting the emotional connections between humans and foreign lands. The series showcases her artistic talent in the medium, highlighting the ease of her painting practice and its natural connection with viewers.
Founded in 2016, the Taipa Village Cultural Association is a non-profit organization formed by professionals concerned with the cultural heritage of Old Taipa Village. It is dedicated to promoting the rich history and unique culture of the area, fostering tourism and community development, further optimizing the tourism and cultural industries, and building a better community.
The association revitalizes Old Taipa Village through various art and cultural activities, shaping it into Macau's distinctive art and lifestyle cultural tourism district. It combines cultural creativity, art, exhibitions, and leisure entertainment to provide more recreational options for tourists and residents, offering an experience of traditional, authentic Macau.
Old Taipa Village, once Portuguese territory inhabited by fishermen, retains architecture blending Portuguese and Chinese styles, along with a series of pastel-colored churches and Chinese temples. Distinct from Macau's casinos, this historic and exotic area is a must-visit landmark for both locals and tourists.
