This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lingnan School master Yang Shan Shen. To commemorate this occasion, the Macao Museum of Art presents the "Spring Breeze and Marvelous Brush: Yang Shan Shen Centennial Art Exhibition." The exhibition is organized with the support and assistance of Yang's descendants and coordinated by his disciple, Rong Shengzu.
Yang Shan Shen (1913–2004), also known as Liu Zhai, was a native of Taishan, Guangdong. He moved to Hong Kong in 1930 and dedicated himself to painting at the age of 20, largely self-taught. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in 1941, he took refuge in Macao and co-founded the "Xieshe Painting Society" with Gao Jianfu and Feng Kanghou. After the war, he returned to settle in Hong Kong, focusing on his art and becoming highly influential in the Hong Kong and Macao art scenes. He taught many students and tirelessly promoted Chinese painting and the Lingnan School, earning the title "The Last Master of the Lingnan School." In 1999, he received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
