Organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the inaugural "Soaring Macau Drone Show Spectacular" took place in October 2021. This innovative event replaced the traditional fireworks festival, offering a new nighttime visual arts experience that combines technology, 2D/3D designs, lighting, and music.
The 10 shows were presented across five distinct themes, blending technology with cultural and artistic elements:
The event featured five professional drone formation teams from mainland China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Tianjin, and Beijing), each with extensive experience performing at major events like the CCTV Spring Festival Gala and Asian Games countdowns. Three of the teams held world records for the most drones flying simultaneously and the longest flight duration.
Drone performance is suitable when wind speed is below 31–40 km/h and there is no rain. MGTO monitored forecasts from the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau and aimed to announce any postponements or cancellations at least two hours before the scheduled showtime.
This event was introduced as a creative alternative to the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest, which was cancelled due to pandemic-related travel restrictions. It represents MGTO's effort to deepen the "Tourism+" cross-sector integration and provide innovative tourism experiences.
