Ching Ming Festival, also known as the Spring Outing Festival, is a time of bright spring scenery and budding greenery. In Macau, the fast pace of city life has not diluted the fine tradition of honoring ancestors. This festival provides an opportunity to express filial piety and remembrance for forebears.
Protestant Cemetery (Christian Cemetery): Located next to the Jardim de Luís de Camões (Camoes Garden), this cemetery is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "The Historic Centre of Macao." It is the resting place for many notable figures, including:
St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery (Old Protestant Cemetery): Situated near Tap Seac Square, this cemetery is renowned for its exquisitely and uniquely designed statues and tombstones. It retains the charm of bygone Western styles and stands as a testament to the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures.
In Macau, as with Chinese communities worldwide, Ching Ming is the day for tending to ancestors' graves. Families make offerings of food, tea, wine, joss sticks, and joss paper. It is an important occasion for multiple generations to gather at cemeteries to pay their respects.
Beyond the Chinese-style cemeteries on Taipa and Coloane, Macau is also home to an Islamic cemetery and mosque, as well as the historic Protestant Cemetery on the Macau Peninsula.
