Snow has been a timeless theme for artists across both Eastern and Western cultures. It can be silent, harsh, or delightful. While each snowflake is small and fluffy, thousands of these beautiful flakes can come together in an instant to cover everything in a powerful, white blanket, transforming the landscape into a sparkling, mysterious, and isolated wonderland.
This series of pictures was taken in Hokkaido. The Ainu people, the Aboriginal inhabitants of Hokkaido, call snow "Ubashi." The "U" means "each other," and "Bashi" means "running." For the Ainu, snow is a mysterious phenomenon that falls from the sky, bleaching the village into a white, sparkling wonder. It nourishes life in the mountains, rivers, and icy lakes. Upon this monotone scenery, life bursts forth with human warmth and colorful spirit.
For three years, from 2009, photographer Season Lao traveled throughout Hokkaido, continually photographing snow-covered landscapes. His aim was to capture his ideal image of snow—an embodiment of happiness born from the sky—intended to refresh the mind and spirit.
