An exhibition showcasing nearly 60 peacock-themed paintings by artist Li Rukuang. The event also marks the launch of the accompanying art book, "Radiant Colors and Refined Spirit: Li Rukuang Peacock Painting Collection."
Li Rukuang, born in 1925 in Xinyi Town, Guangdong Province, hails from a scholarly family and is a descendant of the famous Tang Dynasty general Li Sheng. He graduated from Guangzhou University and Hong Kong's Northcote College of Education.
From a young age, he developed a deep passion for calligraphy and painting. He studied under the Lingnan School master Zhao Shao'ang, dedicating himself to rigorous practice and achieving mastery in both Chinese painting and calligraphy within a few years. His works—featuring flowers, birds, animals, insects, fish, and landscapes—are known for their firm lines, delicate brushstrokes, dynamic composition, and vivid, lifelike quality.
During his youth in Hong Kong, he taught art and served as the Dean and Professor at the Oriental Art Specialized School and as the President of the "Jin Hua Hui" (Contemporary Painting Society). He founded the "Chinese Academy of Fine Arts" over sixty years ago, and his students have since gained international acclaim. Later, he established and currently serves as President of the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Chinese Culture and Arts Association. Li has been dedicated to art education throughout his career, serving on the Hong Kong Education Department's Art Committee and teaching at the University of East Asia and the University of Macau from 1987 onward. Even at the age of 88, he continues to paint daily and mentor students between Hong Kong and Macau.
His works have been collected by museums worldwide since 1955. He has received numerous honors, including an Honorary Fellowship and "Golden Key Award" from the Oriental Art Specialized School (1963), an "Outstanding Achievement Commemorative Medal" from a calligraphy society (1983), an "Honorary Medal" from the Tokyo Calligraphy Federation in Japan (1984), and an "Honorary Golden Lei Award" from the National Museum of History in Taiwan (1983).
This exhibition is part of the "Macao Artists Promotion Programme" organized by the Macao Foundation.
