About the Exhibition

This ceramics solo exhibition by artist Chan On Kei explores the complex relationship between beauty and pain, using high heels as a central motif. The artist's personal experience serves as the starting point to interpret the psychological entanglement between beauty and physical discomfort.

Exhibition Series

The exhibited works are primarily divided into two series:

• "Devour" Series: Expresses how wearing high heels, beyond beauty, forces the wearer to endure accompanying physical pain—as if being devoured by the shoes themselves. This contradicts the shoe's original function of protecting the feet, resembling a "curse of beauty."
• "Bones" Series: Approaches from the perspective of medical symptoms, using bone-like shoes to simulate the physical ailments caused by the aftereffects of high heels. Through repeated stacking and combination, skeletal forms are created to metaphorize social frameworks, expressing a desire buried within the body's genes—a state of dissection and self-reflection where this desire is cut open or excavated—offering a soft indictment of frameworks and conventions.

About the Artist

Chan On Kei holds a Master of Arts from Taipei University of Education and a Bachelor's in Visual Arts from Macao Polytechnic University. She also participated in an exchange program at the Department of Sculpture, Taiwan University of Arts.

Her accolades include the Orientation Foundation Plastic Arts Award – Honorable Mention (2017). Her works have been selected for the Jingdezhen International Ceramic Art Biennale (2021) and the 24th Taocheng Art Exhibition (2020). She has participated in the Kaohsiung Art Fair (2021) and Taipei International Art Fair (2019), with exhibitions in Serbia, South Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and Macao.
