Introduction

Patane Library opened on December 9, 2016. The original structure consists of seven old buildings constructed in the 1930s, boasting over 80 years of history. Its architectural style reflects the characteristics of Macau's former Inner Harbour coastal buildings, featuring a "Tong Lau" (arcaded building) design. This architectural form is a blend of European and Southeast Asian styles, and few similar buildings remain in Macau today.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau revitalized these buildings into a library, aiming not only to provide more reading spaces for Macau residents but also to preserve and maintain structures of special value and significance amidst the city's rapid development, ensuring future generations can appreciate Macau's precious historical architecture. Through this revitalization project, the environment of the Inner Harbour area has been improved, transforming the site into an excellent venue for disseminating culture and knowledge.
