Taipa Village Cultural Association presents the photography exhibition "Nocturnal," showcasing the works of Macau photographer Rusty Fox. The exhibition features his photobook of the same name, presenting the anthropomorphic forms of plants within the urban landscape.
From the texture of the paper and the presentation of images to the narrative and the overall reading experience, the photobook Nocturnal invites readers to enter an alternative yet parallel world beyond everyday life, much like flipping through an old, strange tale.
During the quiet wanderings of the pandemic lockdown, the artist discovered that plants grew more luxuriantly than ever in the completely still city life. Attracted by this vitality, he conceived this series of works. Although capturing the static forms of plants, their body language can be more moving than words. Through the anthropomorphic depiction of biological forms like trees or flowers, the artist presents a vibrant mode of expression, sometimes even with a sensual, tactile stimulation. Under mysterious close-up lenses, these beings no longer seem inert but are full of life—walking, dancing, stretching—much like people in the modern metropolis.
Born in Macau, Rusty Fox holds a Master's in Documentary Photography from the University of South Wales, UK, and a Bachelor's in Photography from the University of East London. He often observes the balance and imbalance in the urban environment, with a particular interest in the relationship between inorganic, lifeless objects and humans as organic beings. He believes documentary photography has no limits in content presentation. The focus of his work is to make visible the often-overlooked relationships between living beings and objects, to discover the everyday within the unusual, and thereby obtain hidden messages that speak for themselves through imagery.
Founded in 2016, the Taipa Village Cultural Association is a non-profit organization formed by a group of professionals concerned with the cultural heritage of Taipa Old Village. It is dedicated to promoting the rich history and unique culture of Taipa Old Village, fostering tourism and community development in the area, further optimizing the tourism and cultural industries, and building a better community.
The Association strives to revitalize Taipa Old Village by organizing various art and cultural activities, shaping the district into Macau's unique art and lifestyle cultural tourism zone. It combines cultural and creative arts, exhibitions, and leisure entertainment to provide more recreational spots for tourists and local residents to experience the traditional and authentic charm of Macau.
Taipa Old Village, once Portuguese territory, was inhabited by fishermen. It still retains architecture that blends Portuguese and Chinese styles, along with a series of pastel-colored churches and Chinese temples. Unlike Macau's casino resorts, this historic and exotic Taipa Old Village is a must-visit landmark for both locals and tourists.
