1844 Macau Photography Art Space is honored to present 'No Where There – Works by Tang Jing,' a solo exhibition by photography artist Tang Jing. The exhibition features 16 images from his ongoing series, which explores the phenomenon of architectural mimicry in China's rapidly developing urban landscapes.
'No Where There' (translated as 'Beautiful New World') is a series Tang Jing began in 2013. The artist selects locations through meticulous research, and his creative process involves interviews, video recordings, and on-site experiences. The title is inspired by Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel Brave New World (1932), reflecting on themes of individuality, collective values, freedom, and order within a seemingly perfect society.
The series documents replica European-style buildings across various Chinese cities, such as the 'Arc de Triomphe' in Wuhan, Luodian Town in Shanghai, and an 'Eiffel Tower' in Hangzhou. Through these images, Tang Jing investigates the relationship between architecture, power, and aesthetics, questioning the cultural trends and identity issues arising from tourism consumption and rapid urban development.
By employing a new documentary photography approach, Tang Jing敏锐地 records the context of urban development in contemporary China, posing critical questions: "Who built these buildings? Who are the users? What were the aesthetic views of the people who built them? How will people with such views affect Chinese society today?"
