Who understands the hardships of the coolies? Cultural Heritage Ambassadors will guide you on a night tour to explore the historical traces of the coolies.
The term "selling piglets" is a familiar metaphor for the Chinese laborers—"coolies"—who were sold to work overseas. The recruitment agencies (piglet houses) once seen throughout the streets and alleys were a portrayal of the coolies' lives in Macau. During the era when Macau transformed from a small fishing port into a center for human trafficking, a stark contrast existed: "While Fong Lon San Street on one side was a scene of revelry and luxury, Rua de São Paulo on the other side was filled with the tragic scenes of families being torn apart and sold into destitution." What were the reasons that gave rise to this industry?
