Photography is, at its core, a reflection of the inner self—this is a belief I hold deeply.
I have never been fond of picturesque, scenic travel photos. Their excessive beauty, often paired with contrived descriptions, tends to give me 'goosebumps.' Instead, I am moved by the ideologies of people, their darker sides, the myriad shadows beneath trees, and those fleeting, overlooked moments. It feels akin to the gaze of my late grandfather. Moreover, all the subjects are captured within the familiar setting of Macao, adding a layer of sentimentality beyond the city's gambling image—like adding a bit of fat to lean meat.
I am profoundly grateful to Ox Warehouse for showcasing my work—these pieces that are purely about me. I have always believed in fate. This exhibition offers viewers a chance to understand my relationship with my grandfather and my motivations for photography. It is also my great honor to introduce my grandfather to you. On a technical level, viewers can discern for themselves the differences between digital and film photography. Do not mythologize film photography; it is merely a product of history's flow, a medium for recording.
Approaching everything with a go-with-the-flow mentality yields a pure image.
