Ao Ngan Wa, a young woman from Macau, spent a year and a half traveling across nearly thirty countries from the US to Europe after university. This book is a collection of her personal stories and photographs from this grand journey. With sincere and inspiring content, it is filled with her unique insights gained on the road. By contrasting the people, events, and cultural differences she encountered with her upbringing in Macau, she reflects a distinctly different attitude towards life. As a 90s-generation youth from Macau, her unique background of traveling and living in different places at different times shows that there are many ways to live, and travel is one of them. The book uses compelling words and photos to encourage the new generation to bravely step out of their comfort zones and embrace challenges.
The photographs in this exhibition are records of "people" from different countries and backgrounds that I captured during my travels in 2014 across Europe, China, Nepal, and Tibet. By capturing people's daily lives, the exhibition showcases the diverse thoughts and behaviors of individuals from different cultural and national backgrounds.
Most of the portraits are of friends I met while traveling or candid shots taken along the way. Through travel, I often step into others' lives with empathy. Each photo has its own unique story. I want you to know that in this world, many different lives are striving to survive, chasing dreams, living, and more.
For those of us living in cities, we are often too busy with our own lives. Taking a little time to get to know a stranger can seem like a luxury. We rarely care about society, the world, or the people around us. Furthermore, society has many systems and criteria to judge whether a person is good or bad, kind or evil, honest or cunning. We follow these rules—whether right or wrong—to view the world and judge others. But we forget that the feelings of the heart are the most honest and correct judgment.
To truly understand yourself, you must first learn to feel everything around you. Only when a person learns to accept and appreciate the souls of others can they have the chance to understand and hear the voice of their own heart. I hope that these varied portrayals of life can stir the heart and serve as an inspiration, allowing everyone to see their most authentic selves.
