Cats are perceived as animals capable of independent thought. They choose what they like, directly pleasing themselves, and do not conform to their owner's arrangements. Yet, this does not make them unlikable; one can only accept it with resignation, even finding them "cute," much like my own old cat.
Perhaps it is their innate "contrasts" that spark our curiosity and admiration: they are both aloof and affectionate, sensitive and clumsy, mischievous and well-behaved, honest and cunning, quiet and noisy, and so on. I can find many more completely different traits in them, yet these traits coexist harmoniously within them. We unconsciously summarize these traits as the cat's personality: "That's just how they are." After all, time spent with cats, whether long or short, is always pleasant.
Lu Yiqi graduated in New Media Art from Jinan University in Guangzhou. From 2010 to 2020, she worked in the design industry, including advertising graphic design, printing technology, and product packaging design. In 2020, she began studying Gongbi flower-and-bird painting under Liu Chunhong, Vice Chairman of the Macau Artists Society. Her series "Licking Quiet," "Butterfly Appreciation," "Sleeping Cat," and "Flower Appreciation" were featured in the Macau Artists Society's "ART in Home" exhibition in 2022. She participated in the "Elegant Ode - Oriental Media Invitational Exhibition" in 2023. She is currently a member of the Macau Artists Society.
The Macau Artists Society, originally the Macau Fine Arts Research Society, was founded in 1956 by the late founding president Mr. Lu Chang and other senior art figures. Since its inception, the Society has adhered to its founding principles: loving the motherland, uniting the art community, promoting local art development, and popularizing aesthetic education. Through over six decades of continuous dedication and diligent development, it has become one of Macau's largest and oldest art organizations.
Patriotism and love for Macau are the Society's proud traditions. From the early days of New China's founding through the 1970s, for over twenty years, the Society played the most crucial role in the annual National Day celebration archway projects, from overall planning and design to construction and installation.
In international exchanges, the Macau Artists Society has co-organized multiple art exchange exhibitions with art groups from South Korea and Hong Kong. It was the first Macau association to use art as a bridge for cultural exchanges with Tibet. Furthermore, artistic exchanges with mainland provinces like Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan began as early as the 1990s. Since Macau's handover, exchanges and cooperation with various mainland cities have become even more frequent, including organizing touring exhibitions of watercolor and oil paintings across Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macau.
In art education, the Society, in collaboration with the Women's General Association of Macau, has organized the All-Macau Children's Drawing Competition for over thirty consecutive years, nurturing generations of young artists. The annual Guilin-Macau Student Sketching Exchange, co-organized with the Soka Gakkai International of Macau and the Macau Chinese Educators' Association, has also cultivated many young artists. To popularize aesthetic education and foster public interest in art, the Society has offered various levels of art training classes. Aligning with the SAR government's cultural policies, it actively cooperates with the Cultural Affairs Bureau to enhance the organizational skills and artistic standards of the younger generation, regularly organizing activities to encourage youth participation, thereby cultivating successors and ensuring the continuity of its mission. Years ago, the Society registered a subordinate youth organization—the Macau Youth Artists Association. Recently, the "Rainbow Road" public welfare project, co-organized with mainland institutions, allows young artists to independently plan and develop teaching materials, traveling to remote ethnic minority areas in mainland China to conduct engaging art classes for children lacking art supplies and teachers. This initiative trains the Society's new generation while receiving praise locally and elevating its aesthetic education services to a new level.
The Macau Artists Society was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit by the Macau SAR Government in 2016 in recognition of its contributions to promoting culture and art.
