The Macao Museum of Art (MAM) presents 'Macao Scenario – Animamix Biennale 2013-2014', a major exhibition showcasing the vibrant anime and comic-inspired art scene of Macao. Featuring over 100 artworks by 23 local artists, this exhibition explores the intersection of animation aesthetics and contemporary art.
This exhibition presents a diverse range of over 100 pieces (sets) from 23 Macao-based artists. The works span multiple mediums, including:
The exhibition features a dedicated 'YOUTH Animation' section, screening nine outstanding short animations created by talented Macao artists, primarily from the younger generation.
'Animamix Biennale 2013-2014' is a collaborative project involving eight major art institutions from six Asian cities:
The exhibition toured through Daegu, Kaohsiung, Beijing, Hong Kong, with Macao as the fifth host city, followed by Shanghai. Each institution curated a local version, offering deep insights into the regional characteristics of anime aesthetics through artistic exchange.
Since the early 20th century, anime and comics have played a significant role in shaping generational aesthetics, especially with the audiovisual media boom of the 1980s. In recent years, a growing number of young Macao artists have matured in using anime concepts and visual language in their art practice.
The Macao edition, titled 'Macao Scenario', aims to present stories with distinct local flavor and imagination through the lens of anime aesthetics. It creates a space where reality and fiction blend and collide, inviting viewers to step outside daily life and re-examine social phenomena from a more objective standpoint.
Through this exhibition, MAM seeks to map the current landscape of anime-inspired art in Macao, showcasing the diversity and endless possibilities of artistic creation, and offering audiences a unique viewing experience.
