The family of the late Macao painter Zhao Mingshan, a senior artist who resided in Mainland China, contacted the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and agreed to donate eight of his original works to the Macao Museum of Art (MAM). These eight original works by Zhao Mingshan possess significant artistic and collection value. Their addition enriches MAM's collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy related to Macao, aiding the museum in its work of collecting, organizing, displaying, and publishing works by Macao's modern and contemporary traditional artists. This allows the public to understand Macao's role and contributions in the development of Chinese art history and enables future generations to appreciate the artistic style of their predecessors.
Zhao Mingshan was one of Macao's representative painters of the Lingnan School. He studied under Situ Qi, a master of flower-and-bird painting in the Lingnan style, making him a third-generation inheritor of the Lingnan painting tradition in Macao. He began learning to paint at the age of thirteen and became most famous for his paintings of flowers, particularly roses. In his youth, Zhao Mingshan met the renowned artist Zhang Daqian in Macao. Zhang Daqian recognized Zhao's solid foundation in painting and held high hopes for his artistic future. Unfortunately, Zhao Mingshan passed away due to illness in the 1960s. Very few of his works survive today, and they are rarely found in private collections.
