Photographer Bonnie Leong explores the relationship between herself and her memories through the tactility, emotional attachment, and personal impression of Chinese traditional food. The artwork uses symbolic imagery to depict the transformation of memories within the artist's psyche, presenting her experience, sensation, and insight.
Bonnie Leong was born in Macao and now lives and works in Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Her artistic process is a form of self-searching, revealing personal experiences and sensations. Central themes in her work include memories, time, boundaries, and displacement.
In recent years, her practice has reflected on the psychological state of individuals amidst rapid cultural, social, and technological change. Her work also investigates the relationship between the individual, the natural environment, and society. Leong has exhibited extensively in North America, Asia, and Europe. Her collaborative works represented Macau at the 53rd Venice Biennale in Italy.
Memories may seem disconnected from our present lives, yet they form the sole link between who we are today and our past. A profound memory is like an item stored in a parcel, accessible for review at any time or place, free from the constraints of time and space. The sensibility of a momentary thought or feeling is precious.
In this series, Leong removes food from its everyday context, preserves it in a unique manner, and presents it in an imaginative state. These images of food symbolize memories that have been stored and kept alive in the subconscious mind. The work represents how memories are transformed through the artist's personal experience, sensation, and insight.
