ARK – Association of Macau Art presents the first solo exhibition in its annual thematic series Art Replay. This series features five local artists, each drawing inspiration from one of the Five Elements – Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth – to showcase the unique creative possibilities of each element through diverse mediums and styles.
This inaugural exhibition, Living Earth, features the photographic works of Macau artist Pamela Chan, inspired by the element of Earth.
The concept of the Five Elements dates back to the Warring States period, representing a philosophical system that categorizes all things in the universe. The element Earth symbolizes stability, slowness, steadiness, and substance, emphasizing a high quality of life and evoking feelings of comfort and security.
Living under the same sky on the same land, people hold vastly different attitudes towards life. Through the concept of Earth, the artist explores the unique lifestyle and philosophy of living in Macau.
Macau's historic district, with its narrow, winding streets and alleys, follows the natural contours of the land. The fusion of Chinese and Portuguese architecture, along with the blend of old and new buildings, perfectly illustrates the beauty of cultural integration and reflects the footprints of residents coexisting with history.
In this urban environment, the artist wandered through every corner of the old districts, returning to the most fundamental paradise to capture the texture of Macau. From various Portuguese-style tiles, weathered walls, carvings on old buildings, and window grilles to the ever-renewing nature, each capture reflects the relationship between humans and their natural environment. Through different realistic scenes, the artist conveys a sense of living in the moment, following one's heart, and embracing a relaxed and carefree feeling.
Born in Macau, Pamela Chan studied Tourism Business Management. As a Macau Cultural Ambassador, she currently serves as the Managing Director of Taipa Village Macau Limited and Vice Chairman of the Taipa Village Cultural Association, dedicated to promoting art, history, culture, and the community economy in Taipa Old Village. In recent years, she has actively collaborated with local art, cultural, and community groups, participating in numerous cultural events, including exhibition curation, arts administration, and serving as a judge and mentor for industry activities.
ARK – Association of Macau Art (AAMA) is dedicated to promoting art and culture. Through various activities such as exhibitions, lectures, and workshops, it aims to provide Macau residents with a space to learn about art, unleash creativity, and enjoy the fun of creation, thereby enhancing public appreciation for art and improving quality of life.
