The annual 'Open Treasures' ritual is a unique tradition dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, Kun Iam (Guan Yin). Derived from southern Chinese folklore with strong local Macau characteristics, this event is centered around the Kun Iam Tong Temple (Pou Chai Sim Un / Puji Chan Yuan), one of the three oldest temples in Macau.
Believers gather for an overnight vigil, praying from the evening of the 21st until the morning of the 22nd to 'return money', 'borrow money,' and beseech protection and prosperity for the coming year. The air is filled with incense, and temporary stalls selling ritual items appear outside the temple.
To facilitate worshippers, temporary stalls are set up for purchasing ritual items like incense and pinwheels.
