About the Exhibition
Acclaimed Portuguese contemporary artist Joana Vasconcelos – the first woman and youngest artist ever to exhibit at the Château de Versailles in 2012 – presents her monumental installation 'Valkyrie Octopus'. This exhibition is part of a visionary art program reflecting Macau's integral role in the 500-year history of trade between China and Portugal. Marking her first solo exhibition in China, Vasconcelos's work is distinguished by its monumental scale, mixed use of appropriated materials, and mastery of organic form.
Featured Artwork
- Valkyrie Octopus: A large-scale, free-form artwork suspended in mid-air. It incorporates elements of the ocean and long voyages, showcasing the Portuguese cultural and historical heritage in Macau. The piece combines traditional Portuguese crochet and Nisa embroidery from the Alto Alentejo region with thousands of LED lights and boldly colored, patterned materials embellished with various beads.
- Tetris Series: Specially created large floor sculptures that allow visitors to sit on them, encouraging viewing and contemplation of the entire work from different angles.
