Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, participated in the 55th Venice Biennale under the name "Macao, China." The Macao Pavilion in Venice, Italy, presented an installation exhibition by Carlos Marreiros titled "Hundred Ways, Sage – Encyclopedic Palace: Carlos Marreiros Experimental Exhibition." The exhibition was inaugurated on Wednesday, May 29, at 5:30 PM (Venice time), showcasing alongside works by internationally renowned masters.
This marked a significant moment for Macao's art scene on the global stage. In 2007, MAM was first invited by the Venice Biennale organizing committee to participate under the "Macao, China" designation, allowing Macao's creative talents to gain international recognition.
The exhibition featured contemporary three-dimensional installations and sketches by Carlos Marreiros. The artworks were strategically dispersed throughout the indoor and outdoor spaces of the pavilion. Parts of the exhibits were visible from outside the venue, designed to intrigue and attract passersby to enter and explore the full display.
Responding to the 55th Venice Biennale's overarching theme, "The Encyclopedic Palace," Marreiros used installation art to conduct a personal exploration. His work aimed to provoke reflection on the manipulation of information. It presented the possible states generated when information is applied and transferred in both orderly and chaotic ways. The exhibition sought to draw public attention and encourage contemplation on the ethical coexistence issues that may arise in contexts where information can be controlled or freely misrepresented.
Four Macao artists participated in an exchange program organized by MAM to conduct research in Venice: Pui Keong, Lei Sio Kit, Chan Ka Keong, and Mariz.
