An exhibition showcasing the oil paintings of Macau-born artist Choi Sok Wing, exploring the fusion of modern Western painting concepts with Eastern artistic aesthetics.
On a white canvas, oil paint flows freely—splashed, smeared, and layered—all for a moment of pure joy. The hand follows the heart's lead: a patch of blue, a few dots of green, a hint of red. The search continues, seeking an idyllic paradise. Brilliance returns to simplicity; the works are hazy and dreamlike, existing between heaven and earth—neither flower nor dream. They are not meant to convey grand ideas, but simply to express a thread of emotion.
Choi Sok Wing is an artist with his own distinct visual language. His painting style is rooted in the combination of modern Western painting concepts and Eastern artistic sensibilities—a unique and expressive new color paradigm. This approach is not solely based on conveying concepts of light, shadow, warmth, coolness, or symbolic representation through color itself. Instead, it draws from the aesthetic principles and techniques of Chinese seals, calligraphy, and traditional painting, particularly in the use of dots and lines. Consequently, his works achieve artistic effects not only through the staggered progression or stark contrast of colors but also because the dots and lines embody the variations commonly found in Chinese art—such as void and solid, strong and weak, hard and soft, dense and light, dry and wet, sparse and dense. This allows his modern art to remarkably evoke the simple, subtle, empty, and transcendent realm of traditional Chinese ink wash painting.
Born in Macau in 1952, Choi Sok Wing is a professional painter. His creative themes primarily focus on the landscapes and impressions of Macau, reflecting his deep affection for this treasured land. His works are mainly in oil and watercolor. He has held exhibitions in Canada, Portugal, Beijing, Shanghai, and Macau.
