Exhibition Overview
This exhibition presents over 140 works/sets from more than thirty-five photographers from Africa and beyond. Through artistic and documentary approaches, the works explore the faces and spirits of African people amidst the currents of time. The images, with their unique richness of color, texture, and substance, radiate an intensity distinct from other regions, showcasing the abundance and diversity of the world.
For residents of Macao, Africa is a vast land that feels distant both geographically and in understanding. However, as one may have noticed, the presence of people of African descent in our small city has gradually increased in recent years. In fact, we have already begun to "gaze" at each other, and we can look forward to "knowing" one another.
Exhibition Details
- Organizers: Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, Macao Museum of Art, Macao Angola Association
- Curatorial Vision: The exhibition includes early ethnographic-style portraits, studio photography, and works by photographers from outside Africa. Themes are diverse, covering records of indigenous peoples in African deserts, stories of African migrants adapting to urban environments, and the contemporary life and spirit of Africa and its people.
- Curator's Statement: Curator Yawang Anbo hopes to present the diverse faces of African people through photography and video, prompting reflection on how Africans view and imagine themselves, and how they wish to be seen by others.
- On Display: 143 photographs and 3 video works.
