French painter and traveler Auguste Borget (1808–1877) embarked on a multi-year global journey from France in October 1836. He arrived in China in 1838, traveling to Macao, Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Fujian. During his time in China, Borget observed local customs, created images, and documented his experiences in writing. In an era before the camera, he left behind many precious visual historical records of the South China coastal region.
The exhibition "Fleeting Light and Shadow" presents the documentary paintings from the 19th-century French artist Borget's travels to the East. Through his objective and meticulous perspective and his concise, lively painting style, visitors can gain insight into the customs and scenery of Macao and its surrounding areas at that time. The exhibits, carefully selected from public museums and private collections in Macao, Hong Kong, France, and the UK, include over 120 pieces such as sketches, watercolors, oil paintings, prints, and ancient books.
Organized by the Macao Museum of Art under the Cultural Affairs Bureau in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao and the Alliance Française de Macao, this exhibition is part of the "French May" program. It showcases over 120 works including sketches, watercolors, oil paintings, prints, and ancient books. Through Borget's documentary paintings, visitors can appreciate the cultural richness, feel the warmth of art, and witness the artistic and cultural exchange between China and France.
