Chinese opera, a quintessential part of Chinese culture and a symbol of its traditional heritage, is a national treasure. In 2001, UNESCO included Kunqu opera in its inaugural 'Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity,' drawing public attention to the development and preservation of opera. Between 2009 and 2010, Cantonese opera, Tibetan opera, and Peking opera were successively inscribed as world-class intangible cultural heritage, earning Chinese opera art widespread international recognition. As one of the world's three ancient theatrical traditions, Chinese opera is a gem of the Chinese nation, a vital component of traditional Chinese culture, and the best interpretation of the continuity of Chinese historical civilization to this day.
As a central city connecting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Macao serves as a bridge for cultural exchange between China and the West, acting as an important channel for the 'Eastward spread of Western learning' and the 'Westward transmission of Chinese learning.' The 'Greater Bay Area Chinese Opera Cultural Festival' upholds the spirit of patriotism and love for Macao. It positions Macao as the core platform for promoting and disseminating China's outstanding traditional culture within the Greater Bay Area. Using Chinese opera as an emotional bond connecting compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao, overseas Chinese, and ethnic Chinese, the festival leverages Macao's domestic and international advantages. Combined with the感染力 of Chinese opera art, it implements patriotic education and strengthens cultural identity and national confidence.
As the first joint exhibition of Chinese opera in the Greater Bay Area, the 'Greater Bay Area Chinese Opera Cultural Festival' uses Macao as a platform and opera as a medium. It unites professional opera artists and资深 enthusiasts from both sides of the strait. While consolidating and enhancing cultural identity and national confidence, it strengthens cultural exchanges with Portuguese-speaking countries. With the core goal of enhancing cultural soft power, the festival aims to 'tell China's story well and spread China's voice effectively' on the world's grand cultural stage.
