The Taipa Village Cultural Association (TVCA) has transformed the Taipa Village Art Space into Macau's first contemporary art museum for this landmark exhibition. It features over 25 artworks by Macau-born artist Felix Vong (Wong Ian Lok). The unique pieces draw inspiration from world-renowned and revered international artists such as Andy Warhol, Banksy, and David Hockney.
Vong employs appropriation techniques to reinterpret contemporary art and cultural history. Half of the exhibited works were created by the artist himself, while the other half were produced in collaboration with artists from Portugal. This conceptual approach seeks to explore the originality of artworks and aesthetics, offering an alternative retrospective of contemporary art.
Felix Vong was born in Macau in 1989 and holds a degree in Graphic Design and Advertising. He currently lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal, where he completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon.
His artistic practice spans painting, drawing, institutional critique, illustration, and photography. He is particularly interested in the influences of imitation, appropriation, vandalism, satire, black humor, and the mischief between falsehood and truth. His first self-published zine, Can You Speak Louder?, was released in 2022.
Vong is a core member of Zaratan-Arte Contemporanea in Lisbon, a non-profit artist-run space where he shares his artistic and philosophical explorations, often mimicking the role of a gallery employee. His works have been exhibited frequently in Lisbon and are part of several private collections in Portugal, France, Italy, and Macau.
Founded in 2016, the Taipa Village Cultural Association is a non-profit organization formed by a group of professionals dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of Taipa Village. The association is committed to promoting the area's rich history and unique culture, fostering tourism and community development, and enhancing the cultural and tourism industries to build a better community.
Through various art and cultural activities, TVCA aims to revitalize Taipa Village, shaping it into Macau's distinctive art and cultural tourism district. By integrating creative industries, art, exhibitions, and leisure experiences, it provides more recreational options for tourists and local residents, offering an authentic taste of traditional Macau.
Taipa Village, once a Portuguese territory inhabited by fishermen, retains architecture that blends Portuguese and Chinese styles, along with a series of pastel-colored churches and Chinese temples. Unlike Macau's casino resorts, this historic and exotic neighborhood is a must-visit landmark for both locals and tourists.
