The 'Elegant Ink Life: Zhou Siyan Macau Calligraphy Exhibition,' organized by the Macao Foundation, will open on April 16, 2013, at the Macao Science and Culture Center Exhibition Hall. This exhibition will showcase over 40 exquisite calligraphy works by the renowned Shanghai calligraphy artist Mr. Zhou Siyan.

Zhou Siyan developed a passion for calligraphy from a young age, beginning his studies with the styles of Yan Zhenqing and Ouyang Xun. He later studied under renowned Shanghai masters Liu Xiaoqing and Wu Jianxian, focusing on regular script (Kai Shu). His work is deeply rooted in the strict Tang dynasty traditions, drawing inspiration from Ouyang Xun's structure, Chu Suiliang's elegance, and Yan Zhenqing's solidity.
He further explored the styles of the Six Dynasties, drawing particular influence from steles such as Zhang Henü's Epitaph, Zheng Wengong Stele, and Shimen Ming. His regular script is known for its precision, powerful brushstrokes, and spirited elegance. He is also proficient in seal, clerical, running, and cursive scripts, demonstrating his ability to synthesize different styles. His regular script works have won first prize in nine national competitions, earning him the reputation of a 'nine-time champion.'
An interesting aspect of Zhou's artistry is his mastery of left-handed calligraphy. After an injury to his right hand, he began practicing with his left hand (being naturally left-handed) and achieved remarkable results. His left-handed calligraphy is now highly regarded for its natural flow, ancient charm, and distinct style reminiscent of Kang Youwei and Huang Binhong, creating a fascinating contrast with his right-handed works.
By absorbing the strengths of Yan, Liu, and Ouyang, Zhou Siyan developed his own distinctive regular script style known as 'Gang Kai' (剛楷, or 'Firm Regular Script'). This style blends the robustness of Yan, the charm of Ouyang, and the neatness of Liu, creating a unique fusion of external elegance and internal strength. His teacher, Liu Xiaoqing, once exclaimed, 'Siyan, you have now founded a new school of regular script.'
