"Colors of Destiny: Chagall's South of France Period" explores the light and color in the artist's works from the 1950s to the 1970s. This creative period was inspired by the dazzling Mediterranean and the radiant scenery of the Côte d'Azur. Chagall first discovered this region in the late 1920s, and the intense light of southern France had a profound impact on him, leading him on a new artistic journey. His travels to Greece in 1952 and 1954 also became a source of inspiration.
For Chagall, color was indispensable, both aesthetically and symbolically, forming the internal structure and spiritual essence of his works. New thematic creations began to take shape, with mythological creatures, mermaids, fish, and radiant suns enriching his art, imbuing his paintings with the essence of the Mediterranean.
This exhibition is the first large-scale Chagall exhibition in Macao, featuring a series of works including oil paintings, gouaches, lithographs, stage costumes, and tapestries, highlighting the artist's stunning use of light and color.
